  • The hotelNEXT competition is open to any undergraduate student enrolled in a Canadian University.
  • Each project entry must be an original hotel concept. Each Team may only submit one project.
  • Teams may consist of a maximum of 4 undergraduate students. Sorry, graduate students are not permitted in this competition.
  • New students cannot join the Team once the project has been submitted on APRIL 3-2017 at 11:59pm EST.
  • Teams who made it into the Top 3 Teams and have presented at the conference in the past are not permitted to enter the competition again.
  • To qualify, Teams must have a mentor sign off on their submission by completing the Application Form.
  • Once an application is submitted, new or updated versions of the presentation may not be submitted.
  • All materials must be in English.
  • There is no limit to the number of Teams that can enter per school.
  • Teams will choose cities/markets. Teams will be allowed to present on the same market.  Markets must be Canadian.
  • Teams are encouraged to contact at least one of our Mentors for insight and feedback.
  • Teams will create their presentation (in PowerPoint or other presentation software of their choice) and submit via Dropbox to Enney Hoang ( no later than APRIL 3- 2017 at 11:59pm EST.
  • All presentations will be evaluated and the top 3 Teams determined by a Selection Committee no later than APRIL 17-2017.

If your Team is chosen:

  • Finalists will be contacted by Big Picture Conferences.
  • If chosen to present, at least 1 member of the Team must speak during the presentation scheduled for MAY 16-2017 at the Canadian Hotel Investment Conference taking place at The Westin Harbour Castle Toronto.
  • Finalists will be required to present a 15 (maximum) minute presentation on stage on MAY 16-2017 at the Canadian Hotel Investment Conference.
  • Non-finalists will also have the opportunity to attend the Canadian Hotel Investment Conference. Contact Enney Hoang ( for more information.
  • A PC laptop and video projector will be provided.
  • There will be a panel of Judges from hotel companies, consulting and investment firms.
  • A $5,000 cash prize will be awarded to the winning Team, with 2nd place and 3rd place Teams winning $3000 and $2000 respectively.
  • The top 3 Teams will be recognized with an award.
  • Presenting Teams will receive compensation for expenses (travel, lodging, meals, etc.) from Big Picture Conferences. For more details regarding compensation please contact Enney Hoang.
  • Regarding the rights of Intellectual Property, once students have presented their ideas at the Canadian Hotel Investment Conference, concepts will be in the public domain for anyone to use.

Criteria of judging will be based on two categories:

    •  Is it a truly out-of-the-box concept? Has this offering or solution ever been introduced before?
    • Can the team easily describe why this concept is not like any other?
    • Are the points of differentiation relevant to the targeted guests?
    • Has the projected income statements been presented accurately?
    • Are they presented five fiscal years out?
    • Is there integrity in the numbers – meaning is the hotel financially viable?
    • Is there a return on investment?
    • How accurately are the competitors and target market identified?

The scoring:

  • There are 2 categories that each Team will be judged on CREATIVITY and FEASIBILITY/ ROI.
  • Each category is worth 50 points, with a total score, per Judge of 100 points.
  • Individual Judges scores will be added up and the average will be taken.  This score counts for 50% of the Team’s grade
  • The remaining 50% will be based on the average from the audience votes.
